The crossovers allowed several to team up and go after bigger pots of money for their growing endeavors. Their missions could be completely different, but the pitfalls they faced were similar. By joining forces, the United Way streamlined the procedure and was accessible to more nonprofits.Īnd what Gannon found was that some of the 13 had already been collaborating with each other. Traditionally, the need to submit multiple applications for a shot at grant opportunities burdened organizations. Gannon said the partnership also made the tedious application process easier. The United Way experienced a 43 percent increase in applications from BIPOC and female-led organizations, and the number of applications from first-timers seeking funds quadrupled as a result of this approach. “This is part of a comprehensive overhaul for our business model at United Way, where we are looking to partner with organizations that traditionally didn't feel like they had a place here because they were too small and they were too new,” Gannon said. Their missions vary from trying to tackle food apartheid to addressing health care disparities and more. The United Way partnered with the alliance to launch the Changemakers Fund - a grant program allotting 13 BIPOC organizations money to support their missions on the front lines of the pandemic. The Healthy Alliance IPA was one of those groups. They were looking to reach historically disproportionately funded groups working in proximity to some of the “deeply entrenched problems” BIPOC communities face, Gannon explained.
Peter Gannon, president and chief executive officer of the United Way of the Greater Capital Region, said a number of peers reached out in the aftermath looking to start funds specifically for groups led by Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Asian American and Pacific Islanders.
